Elizabeth Wheeler, a former editor of St. Martin's Press, is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at the University of Oregon. She also is the Director of Disability Studies Minor. She teaches and researches in the fields of disability studies, young adult and children's literature, comics studies, post-1945 U.S literature and popular culture, and community-based education. She wrote HandiLand: The Crippest Place on Earth about young people with disabilities. Steven Hager is a journalist and the author of Hip-Hop: The Illustrated History of Rap Music, Break Dancing and Subway Graffiti (1984), the first book documenting hip hop music and culture. He is a former reporter for the New York Daily News and former editor of High Times (1988-2003). This collection provides information on the development of hip hop and the individuals who made its rise possible, as recorded by journalist Steven Hager and collected by Elizabeth Wheeler. Documenting hip hop during the early 1970s to mid-1980s, the collection covers the emergence and recognition of this then-new subculture. Included are an outline, manuscript draft, and photocopies of Hager's published writing, along with notes from the initial meeting with the publisher to discuss the publication of Hager's book, Hip-Hop: The Illustrated History of Rap Music, Break Dancing and Subway Graffiti. Marketing and promotional correspondence for the book, as well as articles and reviews of films and books on hip hop, are in the collection. Bill Adler is an American music journalist and critic who specializes in hip hop. He was director of publicity at Def Jam Recordings between 1984 and 1990, and subsequently co-authored the book Def Jam Recordings (2011). He also founded Eyejammie Fine Arts Gallery and co-founded the poetry record label Mouth Almighty Records. Since the early 1980s, he has promoted hip hop in a variety of capacities, including as publicist, biographer, record label executive, museum consultant, curator, and documentary filmmaker. Adler's work as a hip-hop archivist commenced during his years at Rush/Def Jam. The Adler hip hop archive, which includes sound recordings along with album cover art, books, films, videos, photographs, newspaper and magazine articles, publicity materials, and other advertising, was acquired by Cornell University in 2013. Fab 5 Freddy is an African American director, TV host, graffiti artist, and a key personality in the history of hip-hop culture. The Fab 5 Freddy archive traces his multidisciplinary career from the 1980s to the early 2000s, and provides further insight into his public personality; business and recreational activities; and creative endeavors in the fields of writing and art. The collection contains, photographs, notebooks, correspondence, financial, legal, and administrative documents, screenplays, fliers and invitations, artwork, apparel, and magazines. less

Launched around 2014, the Schomburg Center's Hip-Hop Archive Project aimed to engage activists, writers, collectors, and scholars in documenting the early movement from the mid-1970s. Schomburg Center staff Steven Fullwood and Lela Sowell led the effort. It is unclear when the Project ended. This collection consists of primary source resource materials such as oral histories with journalist Harry Allen and the Awesome 2 (Teddy Tedd, and Special K); promotional materials for Echo Park, "Hip-Hop Nation: Roots, Rhymes and Rage," and "Hip Hop Appreciation Week."
